How does the slug trap work?
The trap features two separate chambers. The inner chamber contains a mixture of dry yeast and sugar that slowly ferments in humid conditions, producing a natural scent that attracts slugs. The outer chamber holds iron phosphate pellets (such as Ferramol or Ironmax), which the slugs consume. The enclosed design protects both the attractant and the pellets from rain, sunlight, and birds. After feeding on the pellets, the slugs leave the treated area to seek shelter, where they die naturally without returning.
Does the trap also work in the rain?
Yes. The trap was carefully designed to withstand Estonia's unpredictable weather. Its enclosed housing protects both the attractant and the iron phosphate pellets from rain, morning dew, sunlight, and birds. This helps the bait remain effective for much longer than pellets scattered in the open, allowing you to use up to 10× fewer pellets.
Is bait and pellets included?
Each trap set includes a slug trap, a lid in your chosen colour, and a ground peg to keep it securely in place. Every order also includes a filling funnel. Simply add dry yeast and sugar from your kitchen cupboard, along with iron phosphate pellets, which are widely available at garden centres and DIY stores. A complete starter kit will also be available in the shop as soon as I find the right supplier.
How much bait and pellets should I use?
Each chamber holds approximately one tablespoon. The included filling funnel makes it quick and easy to fill both chambers without spills.
How far apart should the traps be?
For the best protection, place the traps around the perimeter of your garden, spacing them 4–6 m apart.
How often should I check the trap?
We recommend checking the trap at least once a week, and more often during peak slug season. Refill the attractant and iron phosphate pellets as needed. If a trap remains untouched for an extended period, try moving it to a different location, as slugs tend to follow established routes.
Is the trap safer for pets and birds?
Yes. The enclosed design makes the pellets much less accessible to pets and birds. The anchor peg holds the trap firmly in place and stops the wind or birds from dislodging the lid. Always follow the pellet manufacturer's instructions.
Can the trap be used with a robot mower?
If the robot mower's cutting blades sit higher than the trap, it can pass over it without a problem. We recommend testing compatibility with your mower before permanent installation. Avoid the trap with a standard lawnmower or string trimmer
